General Instructions

To submit your images for consideration, you will need to fill out a google form (link is provided at the end of this page). You will be asked to provide your name and email. Once you fill out the form, you will get an email with a link that allows you to edit your answers. IMPORTANT: if you are in CSE 8A in Spring quarter 2023, please use your official UC San Diego email.

You are allowed to make one 16x16 submission and one 32x32 submission. There is a single google form to fill out. In the form, there is a place to add a 16x16 submission, and a place to add a 32x32 submission. You can choose to only make a 16x16 submission (in which case you leave the 32x32 entries unfilled), or to only make a 32x32 submission (in which case you leave the 16x16 entries unfilled), or to make both a 16x16 and a 32x32 submission.

Image Sizes and Formats

For a 16x16 submission, you will need to submit two files: a 16x16 file, and a 160x160 file. IMPORTANT: The 160x160 file needs to be a scaled up version of your 16x16 file, which means that each pixel in the 16x16 file becomes a 10x10 square in the 160x160 file. All the pixels in each 10x10 square should have the SAME COLOR as the corresponding original pixel in the 16x16 file. You can achieve this using a "scaling up" factor. All Pixel Art editing tools have a scaling up factor when exporting, and all the saving functions in the CSE Pixel Art Python library have a scaling parameter.

For a 32x32 submission, you will need to submit two files: a 32x32 file, and 160x160 file. IMPORTANT: The 160x160 file needs to be a scaled up version of your 32x32 file, which means that each pixel in the 32x32 file becomes a 5x5 square in the 160x160 file. All the pixels in each 5x5 square should have the SAME COLOR as the corresponding original pixel in the 32x32 file.

For still images, the preferred format is a PNG file, but GIF also works.

For animations, the only supported format is an animated GIF file. There is a limit of 60 frames.

How to upload your images

You have two options for submitting files. The form will have a question in which you pick the option you want to use. You can always change to another option later by editing your answers (once you submit the form, you will get an email with a link to edit your answers if you so wish):

• Option 1: Upload directly in the google form. This is the simplest way, but once you submit the form, you CANNOT upload files again later in the google form. If you want to update your files later, you can still do it, but you will have to change your answers to pick option 2.

• Option 2: Upload to google drive yourself, and then provide a link to the google drive file in the form. To make this work, you need to make sure the sharing option is set to "Anyone with the link". Here are more detailed directions for creating the links. For each file:

  1. Upload your file to your google drive.
  2. In the google drive web interface, right click on the file, then "Get Link"
  3. In the sharing options, select "Anyone with the link"
  4. Get the link that is the dialog box.
  5. The link should look something like this: https://drive.google.com/file/d/FILEID/view?usp=sharing
  6. Open the link in a new Incognito window and make sure you can see your file
  7. If you see your file in the Incognito window, then you can use this link in the google form
